The Beavertail Cactus performs best in full sun, where it develops its characteristic blue-gray pads and vibrant spring flowers. It has very low water requirements, needing only occasional watering after the soil has completely dried during active growth and almost no supplemental water during winter. Its primary growing season is spring through early summer, with growth slowing during periods of intense summer heat. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, spreading primarily by producing new pads rather than growing taller. This desert species is native to the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.
